OUTLOOK
La Quinta was the Southern Section Division VI runner-up in 1989, but it hasn’t been to the playoffs since. Valko, the first walk-on football coach in league history, was an assistant at Santiago for 15 years. He replaces Steve Castle, who lasted only a year. Valko will run a one- and two-back offense as opposed to Castle’s no-back attack. Livernois and Gondringer are battling for the QB job, which Valko says will entail lots of throwing. But whether the line can give the QB time to throw is a major question.
