Dominant Doubles Team Is Close to Making It a Grand Slam Finish

The best doubles team in women’s tennis has never lost a match in a Grand Slam tournament, has won six Grand Slam titles in succession and still needs to win two more to match Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver.

Navratilova and Shriver are the only doubles team to win tennis’ Grand Slam, the championship of the year’s four major tournaments, which they did in 1984.

But Gigi Fernandez and Natalia Zvereva--who won the last three Grand Slam tournaments in 1992 and the first three of 1993--are one U.S. Open title from equaling it.

Can they?

“We’ll find out,†Fernandez said. “I think we have to not think about it. If we take it as another Grand Slam, our chances are great. If we start thinking ‘Oh, if we win this we win the Grand Slam,’ then we probably not going to win.â€

Only six players have ever won a Grand Slam--Don Budge, Rod Laver, Margaret Court and Steffi Graf in singles and Navratilova and Shriver in doubles.
