Costa Mesa Man Held in Drive-By Shootings
COSTA MESA — A 21-year-old Costa Mesa man was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of attempted murder in the drive-by shooting of two young men on Pomona Avenue.
Police said the attack was apparently gang-related. The two men wounded in the shooting are expected to recover.
The suspect’s vehicle was stopped about a mile from the scene, police said.
“Further investigation led to the arrest of Joseph Guzman Arellano,†said Sgt. Matt Collett. “Other suspects are outstanding.â€
Arellano is being held in the City Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.
Police said the shooting occurred about 2:15 a.m. when victims Javier Vargas, 20, and Miguel Hernandez, 18, were standing on the sidewalk in the 1900 block of Pomona Avenue.
A passenger in a passing vehicle fired shots at them, police said. Vargas was struck in the back, while Hernandez was hit in the leg. Both are in good condition in a hospital, but police did not release the name of the hospital for security reasons.
