AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : In 11th, Blue Jays Rally Past Brewers, 11-10

From Associated Press

John Olerud singled on the first pitch he saw with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, giving the Toronto Blue Jays a come-from-behind 11-10 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Friday night at Toronto.

Toronto increased its lead in the American League East to two games over Boston and New York.

Milwaukee scored twice in the top of the 11th to take a 10-8 lead, but Pat Borders singled and Rickey Henderson tripled to open the bottom of the inning. Henderson scored on a wild pitch by Doug Henry (2-4) to tie the score.

Devon White tripled, and after Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter were intentionally walked to load the bases, Olerud singled over drawn-in center fielder, Robin Yount.

The game featured 36 hits--19 by Toronto, 17 by Milwaukee--seven lead changes and seven ties.

Roberto Alomar, Paul Molitor and Tony Fernandez had three hits apiece for Toronto, while Pat Listach had four hits and B.J Surhoff went three for six with four runs batted in for Milwaukee.

Al Leiter (7-6) got the victory despite walking two of the three hitters he faced in a third of an inning. The loss was Milwaukee’s fifth in a row.

Detroit 5, Boston 1--Bill Gullickson pitched a three-hitter and Kirk Gibson and Scott Livingstone hit fourth-inning homers to break open a close game at Detroit.

Bill Gullickson (7-6) struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in pitching his second complete game of the season. He retired 25 of the last 26 batters, giving up only Scott Cooper’s solo homer in the fifth inning.

Roger Clemens (9-8), who gave up five runs on five hits in four-plus innings, also gave up a homer to Dan Gladden. It was only the third time in his career--and the first time this season--that Clemens gave up three homers in one game.

Clemens struck out five Tigers to raise his career total to 1,999. He is tied for 43rd on the all-time list with Bill Pierce. He was replaced in the fifth after walking leadoff hitter Lou Whitaker.

Gullickson’s victory was his first since July 17 and came against the team that has given him the most trouble of any in the American League. Before Friday, Gullickson was only 3-4 with a 6.84 earned-run average against Boston.

Baltimore 8, Cleveland 1--Rick Sutcliffe pitched an eight-hitter at Baltimore for his first victory since June 23, and the Orioles extended their winning streak to five games.

David Segui homered, Jack Voigt hit three doubles and Cal Ripken had two run-scoring singles for the Orioles.

Sutcliffe (9-7), 0-5 with a 7.43 ERA in his previous seven starts, struck out four and walked one in his third complete game of the season.

Minnesota 4, New York 3--Gene Larkin’s pinch single to shortstop with two outs in the ninth inning at Minneapolis lifted the Twins to their first victory over the Yankees after seven losses this season.

Bob Wickman (10-4) began the ninth by giving up Brian Harper’s single and was relieved by Steve Howe. Mike Pagliarulo sacrificed pinch-runner Jeff Reboulet to second and Rich Monteleone relieved.

After Chip Hale grounded out, advancing Reboulet to third, Larkin hit a grounder that sent shortstop Randy Velarde well to his right. Velarde dropped the ball before he could make a throw.

Kevin Tapani (6-11) gave up only four hits in pitching a complete game--the Twins’ second in three days after going a record 105 games without one--to earn his first home victory of the season.

Texas 5, Seattle 3--Rafael Palmeiro homered for the sixth time in seven games at Texas and the Rangers pulled within 3 1/2 games of the American League West-leading Chicago White Sox.

Kenny Rogers (9-7) pitched seven innings of five-hit ball, struck out three and walked three to give the Rangers three consecutive victories from their starters for only the second time this season.

Tom Henke pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save.

Palmeiro’s solo homer in the fifth, his career-high 29th of the season, pushed Texas’ lead to 5-2 and gave him 10 homers in his last 14 games. He is hitting .357 (10 for 28) with 11 RBIs in the last eight games.

Oakland 5, Kansas City 2--Craig Paquette’s bases-loaded, two-out triple against Brian McRae’s glove in the sixth inning led the Athletics at Kansas City.

Rookie Todd Van Poppel (2-3) gave up two runs and four hits in six innings to get his second victory in a row.
