PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Hostetler to Get Most Playing Time

With four quarterbacks--Jeff Hostetler, Vince Evans, Todd Marinovich and Billy Joe Hobert--on his roster, Raider Coach Art Shell knows there is no way to get all of them adequate playing time in the exhibition season.

Nor does Shell plan on trying.

“I can’t play four guys in one game,†Shell said. “They are just all not going to get the same amount of time. We have a lot of guys.â€

Shell has found one way to sneak an extra quarterback into today’s exhibition opener against the Green Bay Packers in the Hall of Fame game at Canton, Ohio.

With kicker Jeff Jaeger bothered by a calf injury, Shell will use Hobert, the third-round draft choice from Washington, as his kicker.

Hobert has been practicing his kicking throughout training camp.

Barring injury, look for Hostetler to get the majority of the work during the five-game exhibition schedule.

Hostetler will need all the time he can get to adjust to a passing game that is radically different from the ball-control offense he ran with the New York Giants.

The Raiders were happy to leave Austin, Tex., after five days of practice because of high temperatures, and not only those on the field, which often hovered near 100 degrees.

At least six Raiders came down with flu while in Austin.

Evans suffered for two days with a temperature as high as 103 degrees.

Evans is expected to play today.

The Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys remain a tremendous draw at their training site in Austin.

From the opening day of camp, July 16, through three days of practice against the Raiders, ending July 28, the Cowboys drew a total of 76,000 spectators.
