WORLD IN BRIEF : NIGERIA : Government Closes Several Newspapers

Military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Babangida shut down several independent newspapers and broadcast stations, leaving Nigerians with fewer sources of information on the nation’s leadership crisis. The flurry of closings was the biggest of several crackdowns on the media since Babangida annulled the June 12 elections that were to return the country to civilian rule. Heavily armed police raided the media outlets, searched the offices and carted away piles of documents.
