2 Gang Members Held in Shooting of Girl, 10
Two Compton gang members were in custody Friday in connection with the shooting of a 10-year-old Lynwood girl who is listed as brain dead in a hospital while her family waits for the arrival of her father from Mexico, authorities said.
Grisel Arguello has been on life support at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center since Tuesday, when she was shot in the head by two people on bicycles as she left her home near Orchard and Oak avenues with her mother, Guadalupe Arguello.
A 16-year-old boy was jailed Tuesday night and Frank Miller, 21, was arrested Thursday by deputies on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the shooting.
Gang experts with the Sheriff’s Department said the gunmen apparently spotted some gang members and fired at them, but a bullet went astray and hit Grisel. Residents said the bicyclists had suspected some of the gang members of stealing their car.
The Arguellos had moved to their Lynwood house only a month before to get away from gang warfare and shootings in their former neighborhood a few miles away.
The mother said the family expects the girl’s father to arrive soon from Mexico. He was deported there a year ago, and the mother has been supporting three of her eight children who still live at home by working as a janitor.
Sheriff’s deputies have set up a fund for medical expenses at the Sheriff’s Relief Foundation, 11515 S. Colima Road, Whittier 90604.
The juvenile is scheduled to be arraigned in Juvenile Court on Monday, and Miller in Municipal Court on Tuesday. Deputies would not say what led to the two arrests.
