TENNIS ROUNDUP : Bruguera Plays Double to Wrap Up Swiss Crown

Top-seeded Spaniard Sergi Bruguera, in his first tournament since winning the French Open, defended his Swiss Open title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over third-seeded Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic on Sunday at Gstaad.

Bruguera, ranked fifth in the world, had less than four hours between the final and completing a rain-interrupted semifinal in which he defeated unseeded German Marc Goellner, 6-3, 6-0. Rain interrupted the final for an hour.

Bruguera has won 15 matches in a row, last losing May 14 to Jim Courier in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open.

Greg Rusedski, 19, of Canada became the youngest winner of the Hall of Fame tennis championships, outlasting Javier Frana of Argentina, 7-5, 6-7 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), in the final of the $175,000 tournament at Newport, R.I.

It was only the second victory by a Canadian in a men’s singles tournament on the ATP Tour, and Rusedski hadn’t been born when Mike Belkin won the Western Championship at Cincinnati in 1969.

Austria’s Horst Skoff, a clay-court specialist, won the Swedish Open at Bastad, beating Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 7-5, 1-6, 6-0.

The victory, Skoff’s fourth ATP title, was worth $33,800.

Unseeded Radka Bobkova upset top-seeded Mary Pierce of France, 6-3, 6-2, to win a Women’s Tennis Assn. tournament at Palermo, Sicily.

Alexander Volkov of Russia rallied to defeat top-seeded Petr Korda of the Czech Republic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and win the men’s singles title at the Gunze World tournament at Osaka, Japan.

South Africa’s Amanda Coetzer beat NCAA champion Lisa Raymond, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5, for the women’s title on the artificial court of the Municipal Gymnasium.
