Room With a View of Korea’s Past

SEOUL — First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s visit to the Korean Folk Museum on Saturday was a reminder of just how far women have come.
Mrs. Clinton smiled broadly and laughed when shown an exhibit of a sarang bang , a room in old Korean homes that was forbidden to women without permission from their husbands.
Korean men were allowed to visit women’s rooms unannounced, but female family members were never allowed to enter the men’s quarters without permission from the head of the household.
Mrs. Clinton toured the museum on the grounds of Seoul’s centuries-old Kyongbok Palace while her husband held summit talks Saturday with President Kim Young Sam.
