Controversial Convent Near Auschwitz Closed

WARSAW — Poland’s Roman Catholic Church has closed a Carmelite convent at the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz, ending a controversy that long soured relations with Jewish leaders.
The convent, which adjoins the former death camp’s wall, was established in 1984 as a place of prayer for all the people who died at Auschwitz, including more than 1 million Jews.
Jews said the nuns’ presence was an intrusion on the most symbolic monument to the 6 million victims of the Holocaust and demanded the nuns’ removal.
