Kohl Names New Interior Minister as Scandal Grows

BONN — Chancellor Helmut Kohl on Monday named a replacement for Germany’s interior minister, who resigned a day earlier over reports that federal police executed a leftist terrorist.
Manfred Kanther was picked to replace Rudolf Seiters, who quit over the death of Wolfgang Grams, a suspected member of the Red Army Faction. Grams was killed on June 27 in a showdown with Germany’s top anti-terror force.
In a statement announcing Kanther’s appointment, Kohl avoided directly addressing a growing scandal that is becoming one of the most serious embarrassments to face federal security authorities in years.
Kanther is parliamentary chairman of Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union-Christian Social Union coalition in the western German state of Hesse.
