Computer Associates Gives Away Software: In an unusual marketing campaign that reflects the cutthroat competition in the consumer software market, the company is distributing a million free copies of its new personal finance software, Kiplinger’s CA-Simply Money. The Islandia, N.Y.-based firm, which has until now marketed primarily to large corporations, says it expects a tough battle against Intuit’s Quicken, which boasts a customer base of nearly 3 million. Both programs are organized around the familiar checkbook metaphor. After the first million are gone--500,000 have already been snatched up--the plan is to sell the product for $69.99. The company hopes to make money on subsequent upgrades.
