Bill Would Curb Political Activity of Forestry Board
SACRAMENTO — Reacting to the appearance of a timber regulator at an industry-sponsored fund-raiser for Gov. Pete Wilson, lawmakers moved Monday to put restrictions on the political activities of state Forestry Board members.
The Assembly Natural Resources Committee approved legislation that would prohibit Forestry Board members from soliciting or accepting campaign contributions on behalf of the governor. The measure also would prohibit board members who donate money at political fund-raisers from voting on matters that affect any company involved in sponsoring the event.
The restrictions were added to a bill by Sen. Dan McCorquodale (D-Modesto) after it was disclosed that Forestry Board member Joseph Russ had attended a fund-raiser for Wilson sponsored by logging companies.
Wilson is expected to sign the measure, which must still be approved by the Assembly.
