LOCAL NOTES : Qualifying Begins for Junior Sectional Tennis
Qualifying has begun at six Orange County locations for the 91st Southern California Junior Sectional Championships, the nation’s largest junior tennis event.
More than 2,250 entries were accepted for the event that started June 19 at Los Caballeros Sports Village and Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, Heritage Park in Irvine, Santa Ana Tennis Center and Golden West College in Huntington Beach.
Singles and doubles competition is being held for boys and girls in the 10-, 12-, 14-, 16- and 18-year-old divisions.
The 32-player main draw in each division starts Thursday. The finals are June 28 at Los Caballeros. Admission is free.

Cal State Fullerton announced the signing of two softball players. Monica Bagalayos from San Joaquin Delta College and Kristen Stone from Etiwanda High School will play for the Titans next year.
Bagalayos, a middle infielder, hit .719 as a freshman last spring at Delta and was the Northern California player of the year. Stone, an outfielder, hit .380 as a senior.

Rusty Volkert, a pitcher from La Habra High School, said Monday he has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Volkert was 14-11 during his three years on the varsity. He was 3-6 with a 1.91 earned-run average last season.
He was a ninth-round pick of the Blue Jays during the June amateur draft. Volkert will report to the Blue Jays’ rookie league team in Florida.

Misty May and Jennifer Stroffe of In Motion’s 18-and-under volleyball team earned spots on the USA youth national elite team, Coach Sheri Sanders said Monday.
May, who will be a junior at Newport Harbor, and Stroffe, who will be a senior at Corona del Mar, are among the 33 players invited to the national training facility in Colorado Springs, Colo. The top 12 players will represent the United States in international play in Canada later this summer.
May and Stroffe, both Volleyball Monthly All-Americans, will participate at the Junior Olympics in Kansas City, Saturday through Tuesday, then leave for Colorado Springs.

The Rams will host their annual Select-A-Seat day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Anaheim Stadium for fans interested in season tickets.
Fans can meet Ram players Jim Everett, David Lang, Roman Phifer, Anthony Newman, newcomers Irv Eatman and Henry Rolling and rookies Troy Drayton and Russell White.
Former Ram receiver and KMPC broadcaster Jack Snow will host the festivities, beginning at 9 a.m., featuring the premiere of the 1992 Ram highlight film and the 1993 Ram cheerleading squad.
