McDonnell Douglas Machinists Reject Pact: Machinists at McDonnell Douglas Corp.’s St. Louis plants rejected a three-year contract offer and have authorized a strike for Friday at 12:01 a.m. Members of International Machinists and Aerospace Workers District 837, which represents about 7,500 McDonnell Douglas workers, gathered Sunday morning at the Arena in St. Louis for the contract ratification and strike votes. The union’s bargaining committee had recommended rejecting the contract and voting in favor of a strike. A simple majority was needed to ratify the contract, but it was rejected by a vote of 1,393 in favor to 4,418 against. A two-thirds majority was needed to authorize a strike. Members voted 3,912 to 1,316 to walk out. McDonnell officials weren’t immediately available for comment.
