A Simple ‘Mind if We Play Though?’ Would Have Kept It Off Police Blotter
TAMARAC, Fla. — A golfer, angered by a breach of etiquette by two other players, is charged with striking one with his club and, when the club’s head broke off, stabbing the other man with the broken end.
Hugo Torres, 33, was arrested Thursday at Sabal Palm Golf Course on two counts of aggravated battery, the Broward County Sheriff’s Department reported. He was released from jail Friday after posting a $10,000 bond.
Howard Polley, 33, was taken by sheriff’s helicopter to Broward General Hospital for treatment of a neck wound. He remained there Saturday in fair condition.
Police gave the following account of what happened:
Torres and two friends were on the seventh hole when Polley and John Tennyson, 30, of Tamarac, who was driving a golf cart, played through without asking permission.
There was an argument and Torres struck Tennyson on the back with his club. Polley then swung his club at Torres, who blocked it with his club, breaking off the head. Police said Torres then stabbed Polley.
