Fire Hits Seabee Structures
A fire early Saturday morning at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme destroyed one apartment building that was under construction and damaged another, a Seabee official said.
Seabee spokeswoman Linda Wadley said there were no injuries in the two-alarm fire, which began about 2 a.m.
Wadley said the apartment structures were part of a 16-building, $22-million housing project, started in December, 1992. The project, she said, was to provide 300 two-bedroom apartments for Navy families.
Further investigation is being done to determine the cause of the fire and the value of the damage, Wadley said. She said the center’s fire department, along with a unit from Oxnard, had the fire under control in about 45 minutes.
“The structures had walls and roofs and they were starting to do the finish work,†Wadley said. “But they were a long way from being occupied.â€
