KOREATOWN : Police Substation Receives Funds

The Koreatown Police Community Center has received $3,000 toward operating the police substation serving the Koreatown and Wilshire Center areas.
The money from City Councilman Nate Holden’s public services account will go toward the substation’s $41,000 annual budget.
The substation at 3330 W. 8th St. is operated by the Wilshire Community Police Council and staffed by officers from the Wilshire and Rampart divisions. The officers are assisted by Korean-speaking interpreters.
An officer is on duty from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday to take crime and traffic accident reports and answer questions, said Sgt. Ron Batesole, community relations officer with the Wilshire Division.
The substation, established in 1981, handles a total of about 500 calls, reports and visitors each month, said translator Jenny Cho, who has worked at the substation for seven years.
Yohngsohk Choe of the Wilshire Community Police Council said the substation provides a “tremendous service to the community.”
About 30% of the visitors and callers are Latino, Cho said. Some of the officers speak Spanish and an interpreter is available by phone through the LAPD.
