BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Piazza Wrist Gets More Rest

Mike Piazza did not play Thursday in San Diego against the Padres, giving his sore left wrist two consecutive days off. Piazza’s wrist has been bothering him since he hurt it a month ago in Chicago, but he says it’s nothing he can’t play with.

“I have been catching a lot lately,” said Piazza, who has started 50 of the team’s 57 games. “This way it also keeps Carlos (Hernandez) sharp.”

Darryl Strawberry, asked where he was during the bench-clearing incident: “To be honest, I just stayed away. With my back, I can’t afford to be in a fight.” . . . Brett Butler has an errorless streak of 156 games dating to 1992. . . . If Tony Gwynn had singled Thursday, he would have been the first player in Padre history to hit for the cycle.
