VENTURA : School District, Retirees OK Reduced Benefits

The Ventura Unified School District and its retired employees have agreed to a health benefits package that will save the district about $500,000 a year.
The 700 retirees cost the district more than $3 million in health benefits during the current school year--one of several factors threatening to force the district into insolvency, officials said Tuesday night during a school board meeting.
A task force made up of retirees and district personnel came up with the plan to shave 15% off benefit costs, Assistant Supt. Joe Richards said.
