Panorama City : Couple Testifies Man Threatened Victim

A Panorama City man was fatally shot during a pool game in a Van Nuys bar because he talked to a woman, according to testimony given Monday in Van Nuys Superior Court.

Sally Coates and her boyfriend, Jason MacIntosh, testified that Joe Lozano threatened a man they were talking to--even though the couple didn’t know Lozano or the victim.

“I’ll put a bullet between your eyes,” Lozano said to the man he was playing pool with, according to Coates and MacIntosh.

Prosecutors rested their case Monday in Lozano’s trial. He is accused of the shooting April 7, 1992, in the Rack ‘N’ Tap Bar in the 8700 block of Van Nuys Boulevard.

Ronald Wayne Clark, 26, was fatally wounded in the attack, and Gregory Garner was critically injured when Lozano opened fire with a .38-caliber snub nose revolver, according to evidence presented by Deputy Dist. Atty. Linda Acaldo.

Garner testified last week that Lozano shot him first and then chased him out the back door of the bar as Clark lay bleeding on the floor next to a juke box.

Lozano is expected to take the witness stand on his behalf today.
