AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Detroit Win Complete in Every Way

Mark Leiter pitched Detroit’s first complete game of the season as the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox, 5-3, Thursday night to end a three-game losing streak.

Mickey Tettleton and Lou Whitaker homered at Detroit for the Tigers, who increased their AL East lead to one game.

Leiter (5-1), who has won four of his last five starts, gave up three runs and five hits. It was the first complete game by a Detroit pitcher since Frank Tanana did it Sept. 19 against Boston--a span of 64 games.

Chicago’s Kirk McCaskill (2-6), pitching for the first time since irritating a nerve in his elbow May 15, gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Kansas City 6, Milwaukee 5--George Brett hit his fifth home run of the season as Kansas City spoiled Mike Boddicker’s return to Royals Stadium.

Boddicker (3-4), traded from Kansas City to Milwaukee on April 27, gave up six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Mark Gardner (4-2) got the victory, giving up four hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings. Jeff Montgomery got the last three outs for his league-leading 18th save.

The Royals, who went 7-2 on a just-concluded trip, moved five games over .500 for the first time since Oct. 2, 1991.
