SACRAMENTO — Hoping to win votes from Ross Perot’s supporters, Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Stockton) joined Perot’s political organization, declaring that the group’s principles coincide with his traditional Republican values.
Despite his affiliation with Perot’s group--United We Stand, America--Doolittle said he remains a member of the Republican Party.
“I’m the first (member of Congress) to publicly join. I don’t know how many may have joined” privately, he added, flanked by about two dozen Perot supporters.
Doolittle represents the 4th Congressional District, which covers Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Alpine and Mono counties and the northeastern corner of Sacramento County. In 1992, Perot received about 28% of the vote in the district.
