French Film Pioneer Subject of Exhibition
The life and work of French film pioneer Georges Melies will be celebrated in “A Trip to the Movies: Georges Melies, Filmmaker and Magician (1861-1938),†a photographic exhibition at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, June 10-Aug. 20.
A major element of Melies’ work was his creation of still images for pre-production and advertising purposes, and such stills from George Eastman House and other rare photographic documents from the Museum of Modern Art will attempt to re-create the atmosphere in which Melies conjured his fanciful films, the most famous of which is “A Trip to the Moon†(1902). The exhibition is free. Information: (310) 247-3000, Ext. 148.
