Three baseball teams and eight softball teams from the area qualified for the Southern and City Section playoffs.

Pacific League champion Hoover will play host to Royal in a first-round Division I baseball game Friday. Glendale travels to Millikan on Friday. St. Francis defeated Highland, 13-10, in a Division III wild-card game on Tuesday.

The City baseball playoffs begin next week.

In 3-A City Section softball games played Tuesday, Franklin defeated Grant, 6-4, Garfield defeated Marshall, 11-10, and Verdugo Hills defeated University, 4-2.

In first-round Southern Section softball games to be played Friday, Hoover plays host to Bishop Amat, and Crescenta Valley is at La Mirada for Division II games. La Canada plays host to Paso Robles in Division IV. Flintridge Prep plays host to Brethren, and Flintridge Sacred Heart plays host to Ramona Convent in Division V.

The Crescenta Valley boys’ swimming team won its first Southern Section title behind the performance of junior John Jenkins at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The 6-foot-8 Jenkins won individual Division II titles in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events. He also anchored the Falcons’ winning 400-free and 200-medley relays.

Crescenta Valley, under first-year Coach Pete Loporchio, edged Sonora and Loyola for the championship with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Troy Nickell, Jeff Robb and Romas Kudirka swam the first three legs, setting the stage for Jenkins’ anchor leg.

Nickell also won the 100-yard backstroke.

Cori Sue Miller of Hoover was the top Glendale-area finisher in the girls’ competition. Miller finished third in the 200 free and fourth in the 100 breaststroke.

The Marshall High boys’ volleyball team won its first City championship with a 15-3, 15-6, 12-15, 10-15, 15-7 victory over Fairfax in the 3-A final Friday at Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Barristers, under Coach Marji Donatella, finished 14-0.

Marshall middle blocker Tim Surrette had 22 kills and 26 blocks for the Barristers, who broke a 6-6 tie in the fifth game with seven unanswered points.

Glendale Academy was the only area boys’ volleyball team to survive the first round of the Southern Section playoffs.

The Cougars, behind 15 kills from Chirag Desai, defeated Bishop Amat in four games to advance to the second round of the Division III playoffs. The Cougars defeated La Salle, 15-9, 15-8, 15-12, on Tuesday.

Santa Monica swept Crescenta Valley in three games in Division I, St. John Bosco swept Flintridge Prep in Division III, and Glendale was forced to forfeit its match against San Marcos because of an error in the Dynamiters’ record.

Four Crescenta Valley athletes were among area track and field athletes who qualified for Saturday’s Southern Section finals at Cerritos College.

Jon Berg won a jump-off to qualify in the pole vault at 16-feet-3, Martin Hilke qualified in the high jump (6-5), and Charley Welde advanced in the 400 (50.15 seconds) at last weekend’s Division I preliminaries. Nada Kawar qualified in the shotput (42-3).

Margarito Casillas of Hoover qualified in the 1,600 in 4 minutes 19.20 seconds and 3,200 meters in 9:19.17.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Four Glendale College track and field athletes qualified for the State meet that will be staged Saturday at Shasta College.

Robert Nelson qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:03.9), and Carlos Guerra qualified in the javelin (183-1) at last weekend’s Southern California finals at Long Beach.

Allison Oliver advanced in women’s javelin (127-11), and America Rivas qualified in the 5,000 (18:38).

Terry Coblentz, the women’s tennis coach at Glendale College, was selected coach of the year by the Southern California Community College Coaches Assn.

Registration is open for Vaquero basketball camps run by Glendale Coach Brian Beauchemin that will take place June 28-July 2 and Aug. 2-6.

COLLEGES

Senior catcher Bob Kennedy of Occidental College was selected All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference by league coaches.

Kennedy batted .377 for the Tigers, who finished 14-18-2 and 8-13 in conference.

Junior outfielder Stewart Kramer was selected to the second team. Kramer batted .344 with eight home runs and a school-record 16 doubles.

Becky Kopchick of Occidental was selected female track and field athlete of the year in the SCIAC.

Kopchick, a junior, won the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters, and finished second in the 800 at the SCIAC championships.

Kopchick, men’s pole vaulter Gunnar Miller and runners Konstantine Kinderich and Jose Garcia will compete in the NCAA Division III track and field championships that will be staged May 26-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

John Jenkins, Crescenta Valley--Jenkins, a junior, led the Falcons to their first Southern Section swimming championship.

Jenkins established a Southern Section record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.53 seconds. He also won the 100 free (45.92) and anchored the Falcons’ winning 400 free and 200 medley relays.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Robert Nelson, Glendale--Nelson, a sophomore, qualified for the State track and field championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Southern California finals at Long Beach.

Nelson, who graduated from Muir High, finished second in 9:03.9.

MISCELLANY

The city of Glendale is offering tennis instruction for adults and youths beginning June 28. The eight-week program includes 50-minute classes. Registration begins June 1. Glendale: 12-7-1: Cyndee Bennett pitched a perfect game against Crescenta Valley in her final high school game. The Dynamiters finished fourth in the competitive Pacific League and missed the playoffs. 4. La Canada: 13-4; The Rio Hondo League champion Spartans open the Division IV playoffs against Paso Robles. 5. (tie) Flintridge Sacred Heart: 14-7; The Tologs won the Sunshine League championship and will play Ramona Convent in a Division V playoff game. 5. (tie) Franklin: 13-3; The Panthers won the Northern Conference championship and opened the City 3-A playoffs Tuesday with a 6-4 win over Grant.
