Kiss of the Drama Desk: The new musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman,†based on the book by Manuel Puig, won the Drama Desk prize for best musical over “The Who’s Tommy.†Both musicals are also vying for the upcoming Tony Awards. The Drama Desk awards, given by New York theater journalists, were announced Monday when the two musicals each received five Drama Desk awards in all, as did the best play winner, “Angels in America: Millennium Approaches.†La Jolla Playhouse artistic director Des McAnuff picked up the best musical director award for his work on “Tommy,†and George C. Wolfe was named best director of a play for “Angels.†Leading actor awards went to Chita Rivera and Brent Carver of “Kiss,†Ron Leibman of “Angels†and Jane Alexander of “The Sisters Rosensweig.â€
