Csanyi, from University High School, got in on the ground floor when Irvine Valley started its program last spring.

But the chance he took was rewarded well last weekend when the Lasers, under Coach Tom Pestolesi, won the State title. Csanyi, an outside hitter, had 44 kills in the two matches.

He had 27 kills as Irvine Valley beat Santa Monica, 15-11, 5-15, 15-12, 15-11, in the semifinal match.

He came back with 17 kills as Irvine Valley beat Long Beach, 15-6, 13-15, 15-13, 15-10, in the title match.

Another top performer:

* Orange Coast’s Darin Rabb was second in the 1,500 meters (3:52.72) and second in the 5,000 (14:57.70) at the Southern California preliminaries.
