PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Victory Gives Sunny Hills Share of First, Some Respect
Sunny Hills’ softball team may have earned some respect Tuesday by defeating Troy, 5-0, at Sunny Hills High School.
After finishing the nonleague season with a losing record, the Lancers (12-10, 7-2) are tied with La Habra for first place in the Freeway League with one game remaining.
“We’ve gotten a lot of flak from people that we’re not that good,†Sunny Hills Coach Kari Boothroyd said. “We have big hearts and we want to show everybody that we’re as good as everyone else.â€
The Lancers capitalized on five errors in the third inning to score five unearned runs off Heidi Schmidt, who entered the game with the fourth-best earned-run average (0.22) in the county.
Shortstop Megumi Takasaki’s two-run triple, which gave the Lancers a four-run lead, was the key hit in the inning.
Sunny Hill’s Bernie Fancuberta (12-6), who will attend Chapman in the fall, pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Troy fell to 15-9, 5-4.
