Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Man Sentenced for Manslaughter
LANCASTER — A 19-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in state prison Tuesday for voluntary manslaughter in the beating and stabbing death of his former roommate last year in Lancaster.
Lancaster Superior Court Judge Haig Kehiayan sentenced Joseph M. Curlin of Lancaster in the May 22 death of Gary A. Bailey, 42, also of Lancaster. Curlin pleaded no contest to the manslaughter charge last month.
Curlin admitted beating Bailey with a metal pipe and stabbing him in the neck with a knife, claiming he caught Bailey trying to molest a teen-age boy. But authorities did not believe that story, saying Curlin and the teen-ager stole the victim’s car and television set after the attack.
Curlin, Bailey and the boy were drinking beer and liquor at Bailey’s Lancaster house the night of the attack.
