Burke to Address Cal Lutheran Grads
Recently elected Los Angeles County Supervisor Yvonne Braithwaite Burke will address 611 graduates when Cal Lutheran University holds its commencement ceremony 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Clef Stadium in Thousand Oaks.
Burke will talk about creating leadership in higher education, university officials said. She also will be given an honorary law doctorate, officials said.
Burke, who served as a U.S. representative from 1972 to 1978, was the first black woman elected to the House of Representatives from California.
At Ventura College, commencement for 860 graduates will be at 1:30 p.m. May 20 at the college gymnasium, officials said.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Judith Valles, who became the first Latina president of a California college when appointed five years ago to head Golden West College in Huntington Beach.
Moorpark College will hold its graduation ceremony at 5 p.m. May 21 for 1,160 students at the campus quad, officials said. The speaker will be Anna Amarandos, an alumna who manages marketing and communications for Newport Corp. in Newport Beach.
Oxnard College’s commencement for 250 students begins at 2 p.m. May 21 on the lawn next to Simpson Drive. No guest speaker is scheduled; instead, any student can make a remark as he or she receives a diploma, officials said.
