SANTA MONICA : 4 Sentenced in Beating, Robbery of ABC Newsman

Two men were sentenced Tuesday in connection with the beating and robbery of ABC newsman Gary Shepard at his Malibu home last fall.

Santa Monica Superior Court Judge James Albracht sentenced Charles Hicks of Mississippi to four years in prison after he pleaded guilty to first- degree robbery. John Girou of Oklahoma was sentenced to 16 months in prison. He pleaded no contest to two counts of receiving stolen property.

Shepard, 54, suffered severe head injuries when he was beaten with a fireplace poker. He testified at a preliminary hearing that he has no memory of the attack.

On Monday, defendant Larry Morris pleaded guilty to one count of receiving stolen property in connection with the case and was sentenced to two years in prison, and Andrew Winder pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery and also got a two-year sentence.

Norway resident Zoran Marjanovic, who pleaded guilty to robbery, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
