TENNIS ROUNDUP : Seles Shows She Hasn’t Lost a Step
Monica Seles, showing no rustiness after a two-month layoff, breezed into the quarterfinals of the Citizen Cup at Hamburg, Germany, Thursday by defeating Patricia Tarabini of Argentina, 6-2, 6-2.
Seles is playing in her first tournament since being sidelined by a viral infection Feb. 21 at the Paris Open.
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario also advanced when her opponent, Barbara Rittner of Germany, withdrew because of bronchitis after dropping the first set, 6-1.
Sixth-seeded Anke Huber struggled against fellow German Petra Begerow before winning, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1.
Of the world’s 11 top players, six are playing in the tournament.
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl moved into the quarterfinals of the BMW Open at Munich, Germany, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sweden’s Magnus Gustafson.
Third-seeded Michael Stich of Germany advanced by breezing past Karol Kucera of Slovakia, 6-0, 7-5. Stich, winner at Wimbledon in 1991, will play Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic, who defeated countryman Martin Damm, 6-2, 6-3.
France’s Cedric Pioline defeated Germany’s Markus Naewie, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg defeated fellow Swede Jonas Svensson, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of Spain’s City of Madrid Grand Prix.
Third-seeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay. Bruguera won the Monte Carlo Open last Monday.
Spanish players delighted the local fans with second-round victories in the clay-court tournament: Alex Corretja defeated Gabriel Markus of Argentina, 6-3, 6-4, and Jordi Burillo beat Francisco Clavet of Spain, 6-4, 7-5.
