Pierce Dominates WSC Awards in Tennis

The Pierce College men’s tennis team swept All-Western State Conference honors. Al Martinez, the Brahmas’ No. 1 singles player, was named player of the year and Paul Xanthos was named coach of the year. Additionally, all six singles players were first-team selections.

The team was led by Martinez, from Calabasas High, who posted a 7-0 record in conference and was followed by No. 2 John Rom (12-0), No. 3 Vanja Nadali from Burroughs (12-0), No. 4 Philip Leonhardt (10-0), No. 5 Simaan Hawa from Moorpark (10-0) and No. 6 John Kearsley (7-0). Hawa shared first-team honors with Jeff Villano of Santa Barbara City College.

Soccer

Two under-16 area club teams advanced to the western regional playoffs after winning the California Youth Soccer Assn. South’s State Cup championship Sunday at Brea-Olinda High.

The California Stars boys’ team defeated the La Jolla Nomads, 1-0. Chris Sailer of Notre Dame High was named the most valuable player of the title match, Rafael Reyes of San Fernando High scored for the Stars and goalkeeper Jay Rosen of Harvard-Westlake stopped a penalty shot to preserve the win.

The Stars beat the North Hollywood Jets, 5-4 in penalty kicks, in a semifinal match Saturday.

The Valley United Wild Things won the girls’ under-16 championship, beating the North Huntington Beach Football Club, 3-1. Natalie Dorr of Ventura High scored all three goals.

Last year the Wild Things won the under-14 CYSA South State Cup title match.

Both teams advanced to the Far West regional, to be held in June in Albuquerque, N.M. The winner of the regional advances to the national semifinals.

The Tri-Valley Soccer Club, an under-16 girls’ team, will hold an open tryout Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Balboa Park. Players must be born after Aug. 1, 1977.

Miscellany

Lianne Ishikawa, a former Buena High basketball standout, will play for Loyola Marymount next season. Ishikawa previously played for Cal State Fullerton.
