Tim Ellis is expected to be named today as football coach at Tustin High School.

His name was to be submitted for approval by the Tustin Unified School District’s board of education at its meeting Monday night, according to a former co-worker of Ellis’.

Ellis, an assistant at Cerritos Gahr last season, was the school’s second choice, according to a source at Tustin. Former La Quinta Coach Roger Takahashi was offered the job last week. He turned it down for financial reasons.

Ellis will replace Marijon Ancich, who resigned after last season to accept the football job at Santa Fe Springs St. Paul.

This will be the first head coaching job for Ellis, who spent one season as the offensive coordinator at Gahr. He was hired as the Gladiators’ head coach in December after Steve Nishimoto resigned. But Ellis decided to pursue the Tustin job after Ancich resigned.

Ellis was a varsity assistant at Bellflower St. John Bosco for 10 years. He will inherit a Tustin program that has been one of the elite in Orange County the last decade.

The Tillers won four Sea View League titles and qualified for the playoffs seven times in nine seasons under Ancich. Ellis was also the head baseball coach at St. John Bosco from 1989-91. The Braves won the Angelus League title in 1991.
