ORANGE, SANTA ANA : Volunteers to Create ‘Christmas in April’

Several dozen low-income residents will benefit Saturday from the goodwill of the Orange County chapter of Christmas in April as volunteers spend the day repairing and renovating homes in Orange and Santa Ana.

Christmas in April is a one-day blitz by more than 700 local residents who who will spruce up 17 homes, a soup kitchen and a homeless shelter. They spend the day cleaning, landscaping, hauling trash, and providing carpentry, plumbing, roofing and electrical repairs to the homes occupied by indigent elderly and disabled people.

“The homes are selected by local volunteer organizations,†said spokeswoman Mary Kennedy. “The basic objective is to help the disabled or elderly with low incomes feel comfortable, safe and warn in their home environment.â€

Christmas in April is a national organization established in Washington in 1983. In 1993, the organization hopes to aid in the renovation of more than 3,000 homes nationwide with the help of more than 100,000 volunteers, Kennedy said.
