Ellie Nesler

Alan Dershowitz’s condemnation of Ellie Nesler (Commentary, April 16) ignored the reality that without consensus there is no law. Dershowitz also failed to mention that the accused molester of Nesler’s 7-year-old son, Daniel Driver, had an extensive history of molesting children.

An impartial jury is likely to view the late Driver as an unrepentant sexual predator who took advantage of a judicial system that places more emphasis upon rehabilitation and treatment than upon punishment and isolation.

When Dershowitz calls Nesler a coward for denying Driver a fair trial, one can only hope the jury will weigh the courage and fairness that child molesters show their victims. It’s also hoped the jury will consider, in light of Driver’s response to previous convictions, how much of a deterrent another conviction would have been. Maybe Nesler did society a favor by sparing other children, and their parents, from the horrors of future molestations. Let’s hope that Nesler’s jury is truly of her peers.
