Amdahl to Cut Work Force by 1,100: Amdahl Corp., a maker of large-scale computer systems, said it will cut its worldwide work force of about 8,500 people by about 1,100 by late May. The company has made jobs cuts in the same range over the last six months. It said the cuts are in response to continued difficulties in the mainframe computer market and that orders are significantly down in the first part of 1993. Amdahl said last month that it expected its first-quarter results to be “considerably worse†than analysts had estimated. Results will be reported next week.
