More than 2,000 people gathered Sunday at the Holocaust Memorial in Pan Pacific Park for a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Coming one day after the announcement of the verdicts in the federal Rodney G. King beating trial, the event was held under tight security, but it passed without incident.

Author Leon Uris, whose work, “Mila 18,†is based on the story of the doomed Jewish Resistance movement in the Polish capital during World War II, addressed the crowd, along with U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-N.J.), and other speakers.

The event was sponsored by the Martyrs Memorial and Museum of the Holocaust, which is housed in the Wilshire Boulevard headquarters of the Jewish Federation Council, and by the sponsors of the Los Angeles Holocaust Monument.
