HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Hernandez’s No-Hitter Propels L.A. Baptist

Matt Hernandez pitched a no-hitter, striking out eight, to carry L.A. Baptist High to a 4-0 victory over Village Christian on Thursday in an Alpha League baseball game at North Hills.

Hernandez (6-0), a junior right-hander who walked one, also had a hit and drove in a run for L.A. Baptist (10-4, 4-1 in league play).

The Knights scored three runs on one hit in the first inning.

In other baseball games:

Cleveland 8, Taft 7--Mike Immken scored the winning run in the seventh and earned the victory in relief for the Cavaliers (4-8-1, 3-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Woodland Hills.

Taft (13-4, 4-4) led, 5-2, after the first inning.

Granada Hills 8, Reseda 1--Phillip Cohen hit a three-run homer in the second and Matt Livingston pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight, for the Highlanders (5-10, 2-6) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

Sylmar 7, Canoga Park 5--Carlos Velazco struck out six in five innings and catcher Shane Ranking was three for four with two RBIs in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory for Sylmar (11-6, 7-1) at Canoga Park.

El Camino Real 2, San Fernando 1--Craig Carlton’s two-run single in the first inning was enough for the Conquistadores in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at El Camino Real.

Grant 9, Van Nuys 8--The Lancers scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-7 lead and held on for a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Van Nuys.

North Hollywood 5, Birmingham 4--Robert Talamantes scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a shallow sacrifice fly by Rafael Cabrera in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood (9-4, 6-2).

Harvard-Westlake 18, Oak Park 3--Dan Mason was three for four with five RBIs and scored a run for Harvard in a nonleague game at Oak Park.

Marshall 6, Verdugo Hills 5--Eric Schmidt went three for three in a losing cause for the Dons (4-8, 3-5) in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills. Matt Fitzgerald (2-2) took the loss.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Simi Valley 1, Newbury Park 0--Sara Griffin struck out 15 and scored the game’s only run, leading the Southern Section’s top-ranked team to a Marmonte League victory at Newbury Park.

Griffin, who was three for three for the Pioneers (16-0, 6-0), singled with two out in the first and scored on Tracy Hansen’s double.

The Panthers are 13-2, 6-1.

Hoover 3, Glendale 0--Nancy Evans pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11, as the Tornadoes (15-0-1) won a Pacific League opener.

Harvard-Westlake 3, Oakwood 1--Tiffany Zwicker hit a two-run single in the fifth inning of a nonleague game at Harvard-Westlake (5-3, 0-3).

Crescenta Valley 4, Arcadia 2--Danielle Robertshaw (10-1) pitched a four-hitter and doubled twice in a Pacific League game at Crescenta Valley (11-1, 1-0).

El Camino Real 12, Cleveland 1--Courtney Henderson was three for four, and Tami Jones and Samantha Webb each homered for the Conquistadores (10-4, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game. Cleveland is 5-3, 0-3.

Reseda 13, Kennedy 2--Jayme Rebbeck pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and was two for three with three RBIs for the Regents (7-1, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

L.A. Baptist 24, Village Christian 13--Alisa Girard was five for six with six RBIs and Tobi Bowman was four for five with three RBIs, leading the Knights (6-6, 2-1) to an Alpha league victory.

Oak Park 7, Carpinteria 0--Tabitha Tata threw a four-hitter and Victoria Blint was three for four with four RBIs and two triples.

Agoura 5, Thousand Oaks 0--Lisa Kap was two for three with a double and two RBIs, and Megan Kenny pitched a two-hitter for the Chargers (4-10, 3-5) in a Marmonte league game at Agoura.

Taft 9, Granada Hills 1--Keri Borzello was four for four with two RBIs and Julie Kawamoto pitched a three-hitter for Taft.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Quartz Hill 10, Burbank 8--The Rebels won six of nine singles matches and No. 1 doubles team Charlie Stoll and Vivek Krishnan went 3-0 in a nonleague match at Quartz Hill (13-1).

Burbank (10-3) is the top-ranked team in Division III.
