ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills’ Lee Cards 39 in Golf Upset

John Lee shot a three-over 39 at Los Coyotes to lead fifth-ranked Sunny Hills to a 200-212 upset over second-ranked Huntington Beach in a nonleague golf match Thursday.

Steve Sugarman, freshman Terry Noe and sophomore Peter Yang each shot 40 for Sunny Hills (11-2-1). Jeff Farley was one of three players who shot team-leading 41s for the Oilers (11-3).

In Empire League golf:

Esperanza 184, Cypress 241--Chris Berry shot a one-under 34 and Chris Fox shot even-par 35 to lead Esperanza (12-1, 6-0) at Yorba Linda Country Club.

In the Century League:

Foothill 178, Orange 195--Kevin McCarthy shot an even-par 33 at Riverview for Foothill (6-10, 3-1).

El Modena 199, Villa Park 213--Sean Brocklebank and Brian Madden shot two-over 38s to lead El Modena (11-5, 5-0) on the Riverside course at Green River. Villa Park is 1-4 in league.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 194, Magnolia 301-Paul Chiotti shot a one-under 35 for Brea-Olinda (10-0, 5-0) at Imperial.

Valencia 206, Western 232--John Lee shot par 37 for Valencia (4-1, 11-2) at Alta Vista.

Western junior Tiger Woods did not play because of a back injury sustained at school. Western Coach Don Crosby said Woods’ suffers from curvature of the spine and is day-to-day.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 208, Ocean View 222--Jay Supple of Edison (8-4, 5-2) and Kurt Mascio of Ocean View shot three-over 39s at SeaCliff.

Marina 188, Westminster 241--Brock Cronn shot par 35 at Meadowlark for Marina (8-1, 7-0).

Servite 205, Fountain Valley 211--Medalist Mike Lauder shot par 36 at Mile Square for Servite (11-3, 5-2). Fountain Valley is 2-5, 4-9.

In Garden Grove League baseball:

Pacifica 8, Santiago 6--Catcher Jeff Depippo was three for four with two doubles, a triple and an RBI for host Pacifica (8-9, 3-2). Scott Foley (1-0) was the winning pitcher. Santiago drops to 2-3.

In the South Coast League boys’ swimming:

El Toro 86, Capistrano Valley 84--John Simmons won in the 200 freestyle (1:41.98) and the 100 backstroke (52.17) for El Toro (8-1, 3-0). Mark Spencer of Capistrano Valley swept events in the 200 individual medley (2:01.07) and the 100 freestyle (49.96).

Mater Dei 91, Dana Hills 75--Eric Greenberg won the 100 butterfly (1:02.08) and 100 backstroke (1:03.18) for visiting Mater Dei (3-4, 1-2).

In South Coast League girls’ swimming:

El Toro 106, Capistrano Valley 60--Senior Alyson Roney won the 100 backstroke (1:01.92) for El Toro (9-0, 3-0), which remains undefeated.

Mater Dei 98, Dana Hills 72--Suzie Barker won the 200 individual medley (2:25.47) and 100 backstroke (1:09.03) and Michelle Pereira won the 200 freestyle (2:06.37) and 100 freestyle (57.52) for visiting Mater Dei (4-2-1, 2-1).
