The 35th annual Mt. San Antonio College Relays, the largest track and field meet in the nation, begins with community college competition today in Walnut.

High school competition will begin Friday. Olympic champions Carl Lewis, Kevin Young, Mike Marsh, Leroy Burrell and Michael Johnson are among the world-class athletes expected to compete in the open competition, which begins Saturday.

Olympic decathlete Dave Johnson and sprinters Davidson and Osmond Enzinwa--all of whom competed at Azusa Pacific University--are also among the open participants.

Ten boys and 10 girls who were selected to The Times’ San Gabriel Valley high school all-star basketball teams will be honored Sunday at the Pasadena Hilton.

The area players and coaches of the year will also be announced at the awards breakfast.

The Arcadia National Little League is seeking former players, coaches and officials for its 40th anniversary celebration that will take place May 1 at the National Guard armory in Arcadia.

The league was founded in 1953 and has served as a training ground for several major league players, including Todd Worrell of the Dodgers.

DeVon Edwards of Cal Poly Pomona and Marisol Cossio and Kim Ojeda of Cal State Los Angeles have qualified for next month’s NCAA Division II national meet in San Angelo, Tex.

Edwards qualified in the men’s 400 meters with a time of 46.45 seconds.

Cossio and Ojeda qualified in the women’s 10,000. Cossio’s time of 35 minutes 7 seconds and Ojeda’s 35:53.0 were the third- and fourth-fastest in school history.

Bryan Bridgewater, the Division II record-holder in the 100 and 200 meters, has qualified in those events as well as the 400 (46.98).

Two boys and one girl from San Gabriel Valley-area high schools won their individual events at the Arcadia Invitational track meet last weekend.

Gerald Stamps of Muir won the 100 hurdles in 14.31 seconds. Kenny Haslip won the 300 intermediate hurdles in 37.45 seconds. The Muir 400 relay team won its event in 41.43 seconds.

Asha Jayasinghe of Arcadia won the 400 in 55.63 seconds, the fastest time in the state this year.

Juliana Yendork, who set the national high school record in the triple jump (44-0 1/2) at Walnut High in 1991, was inducted into the meet’s hall of fame. Yendork is attending UCLA but is not competing for the Bruins.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s softball team entered the week 12-17, but the Broncos are coming off a victory over ninth-ranked California and All-American pitcher Michele Granger.

Pomona beat the Golden Bears, 1-0, scoring a run on an error in the fourth inning.

Granger struck out 11--including her 1,500th career strikeout. Carie Evans of Pomona gave up four hits and struck out five in the complete-game victory.

Pasadena City College has dropped water polo and added men’s volleyball to its intercollegiate program beginning in the 1993-94 school year.

Bill Sandstrom was named coach of the volleyball team, which competed on the club level this past season under women’s volleyball Coach Lori Jepsen.

The water polo team finished 0-19 last fall.

High school soccer players may apply for college scholarships worth $1,000 each that will be presented by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Ford Motor Co.

Ten scholarships will be awarded.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race walking and tennis for handicapped athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
