Army Cancels Plans to Test AIDS Vaccine

WASHINGTON — The Army has given up plans to test an AIDS vaccine and will turn over to the National Institutes of Health the $20 million that had been appropriated for the test, Administration officials said Thursday.
Army medical officers decided to forgo the vaccine trials after meeting Wednesday with executives from the NIH and the Food and Drug Administration, according to officials in the Department of Health and Human Services, the NIH and the Pentagon.
The Army officials agreed to transfer the funds to the NIH, which plans to conduct a multiproduct vaccine trial.
