NATION IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Cuomo Reportedly Declines Court Job
Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, believed to be President Clinton’s top choice for the next Supreme Court vacancy, reportedly has withdrawn his name from consideration, according to the newspaper Newsday. The paper said that officials familiar with the situation said that Cuomo told Clinton he did not want the job in a phone conversation with the President last Thursday. Cuomo did not return reporters’ calls on the subject and his office refused to comment. Cuomo’s apparent decision to pull out of the running stunned insiders in Albany, N.Y., and Washington, who have speculated for weeks that Cuomo was eager to take the job if it were offered.
