Irvine 8, Las Vegas Valley 2--Ryan Jones had three hits and two RBIs and Scott Seal and Tommy Louie each had two RBIs for for Irvine (9-5), ranked ninth in the nation by USA Today. Ryan O’Toole allowed three hits and struck out five through five innings to pick up victory. Valley is 10-3.
Esperanza 8, Mobile UMS-Wright Prep (Ala.) 1--Jason Goettsche’s three-run homer in the fifth inning led Esperanza (9-3) to a first-round victory at El Dorado High.
Marist (N.J.) 8, El Dorado 7--El Dorado had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate for the final out in the bottom of the seventh at Cal State Fullerton. El Dorado (8-4) trailed, 8-6, to start the bottom of the inning but Chad Peters singled with runners on second and third and two outs.
One run scored but Marist left fielder Lou Picchione threw out pinch-runner Blayne Leitner at the plate for the final out.
