Mike Standly shot a five-under-par 67 on Sunday, then withstood final-hole challenges by Payne Stewart and Russ Cochran for a one-stroke victory in the Freeport-McMoRan Classic at New Orleans.
Standly, who won $180,000 and qualified for the Masters this week, finished 72 holes at seven-under 281 at the 7,116-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club course.
Stewart and Cochran barely missed birdie putts on the 18th hole. Each shot 69 to finish at 282.
“I thought I had a good chance today,” said Standly, who began play two strokes behind 54-hole leader Greg Kraft. “I started off good. I one-putted the first seven holes, so I thought I might do it if I kept it simple.”
Trish Johnson of Wales shot a windblown, five-under-par 67 to run away from the field for a four-shot victory in the $450,000 Las Vegas LPGA at Canyon Gate.
Johnson, three shots behind second-round leader Brandie Burton when final-round play began, was one of only nine players to break par Sunday as wind gusts reached 40 m.p.h. She finished at seven-under 209 for her first victory in six seasons on the LPGA tour.
Missie McGeorge shot 71 to finish second at 213.
