HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Evans Makes Perfect for the 14th Time, Strikes Out 20

Hoover High’s Nancy Evans pitched a perfect game with 20 strikeouts in the Tornadoes’ 3-0 softball victory over Burbank on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Evans extended her Southern Section record of perfect games to 14. Her last perfect game also came against Burbank, on March 17 in the championship game of the Glendale tournament.

For the Arizona-bound Evans (9-0), it is her sixth no-hitter and third perfect game this season. The only fair ball hit against Evans was a fly out to left field to end the first inning.

Brenda Lyon went four for four with a triple for Hoover.

In other softball games:

Crescenta Valley 12, South Pasadena 0--Sophomore Danielle Robertshaw pitched in her third no-hitter of the season and drove in three runs in a nonleague game.

Robertshaw (6-0), who has allowed three hits in six games, was relieved in the seventh by freshman Danielle Ferreira. Falcon Coach Dan Berry wanted to see Ferreira pitch before Crescenta Valley begins a tournament in Las Vegas.

Center fielder Stephanie Kanzler was three for four with three RBIs for the Falcons (6-0).

El Camino Real 1, Granada Hills 0--Courtney Henderson scored from third on an error in the fourth inning of a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Granada Hills.

Junior Jennifer Gould (7-2) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts for El Camino Real (7-2).

Hart 9, Burroughs 2--Erica Christansen was three for three and scored twice to lead the Indians (3-3, 1-0 in league play) to a Foothill League victory. Freshman Mary Colleran pitched a complete game for Hart, striking out three and walking one.

Moorpark 17, Calabasas 0--Cher Tinnerello went four for five with five RBIs to lead the Musketeers’ 15-hit attack against Calabasas in Frontier League game.

Senior right-hander Mindy Penrod (3-2), who went three for five, threw a three-hitter, had eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Reseda 9, San Fernando 2--Rosie Yeatts pitched a complete game and was three for five with three RBIs to lead the Regents (5-1) to a victory in a Northwest Valley Conference opener. San Fernando is 5-5.

Newbury Park 7, Channel Islands 0--Shannon Swales didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning, striking out seven for the Panthers in a Marmonte League game. Brandi Funk was two for four with two RBIs.

Simi Valley 6, Westlake 0--Junior right-hander Sara Griffin pitched her second no-hitter of the season, striking out 13 for Simi Valley (9-0, 3-0) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Tracy Hansen had a two-run single and Kris Lufkin had a run-scoring single to highlight a four-run first inning. Dayna Skinner had a run-scoring single in the second and sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Royal 13, Agoura 0--Junior Tricia Pohlhert was five for five with four RBIs for host Royal (7-5-1, 2-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Montclair Prep 3, Western Christian 1--Kori Okun’s two-out, two-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning of the nonleague game to give visiting Montclair Prep its first victory over Western Christian since 1985.

Rebecca Haeussler pitched a two-hitter, struck out five and walked two for the Mounties (4-4). Western Christian is 5-2.

BASEBALL

El Camino Real 3, Cleveland 1--The Conquistadores, ranked third in The Times’ area poll, scored three times in the bottom of the sixth and junior left-hander Randy Wolf pitched a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

El Camino Real (8-1, 4-0), which stranded eight runners, loaded the bases with two out in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Craig Carlton was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. Justin Martin, who had three of his team’s four hits, followed with a two-run single.

Chatsworth 13, San Fernando 3--Tony Montiel drove in six runs for Chatsworth (7-2, 4-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Montiel had two-run triples in the first and second innings, and a two-run double in the third as Chatsworth built an 11-1 lead.

Jim DeBiasi (5-0) pitched 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory.

Javier Lujan had two hits for San Fernando (4-4-1, 2-2).

Taft 12, Granada Hills 1--Stacy Kleiner pitched a two-hitter and went three for four as the sixth-ranked Toreadors (7-2, 3-1) routed the Highlanders (2-7, 0-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Granada Hills.

John Mayer’s home run in the fifth and Jim O’Brien’s single were the only hits for Granada Hills.

Poly 3, Birmingham 1--Luciano Cuevas’ two-run single in the bottom of the sixth decided the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Danny Martinez had a run-scoring triple in the fifth for Poly (4-5, 4-0). Birmingham is 2-5-2, 1-3.

Canoga Park 2, Grant 1--Reliever John Carlsen needed only one pitch to get a double play and record his second save in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

North Hollywood 1, Van Nuys 0--Omar Paz and Patrick Fields combined for the shutout after Fields left the game with one out in the second inning with tightness in his shoulder. Paz (2-0) allowed four hits in 5 2/3 inning. Oscar Gonzalez’s single in the third drove in the only run.

Kennedy 15, Reseda 8--Richard Nadeau hit a three-run homer during a five-run first inning for the eighth-ranked Golden Cougars (7-2, 2-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Verdugo Hills 5, Belmont 4--Eddie Powell drove in the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh, capping a four-run inning in a Northern Conference game.

Ventura 3, Santa Barbara 1--Right-hander John French (2-2) logged his second consecutive complete game, striking out nine and scattering four singles in a Channel League game at Ventura.

L.A. Baptist 10, Western Christian 1--Matt Hernandez drove in four runs and pitched a complete game, striking out eight, to lead the Knights (7-4, 1-1) to an Alpha League victory.

Village Christian 7, Maranatha 0--Jeff Deal pitched a three-hitter, allowing only three balls to be hit out of the infield in an Alpha League game at Village Christian. Deal also had two hits for the Crusaders (4-3, 1-0).

Hueneme 10, Rio Mesa 5--Juan Ponce hit a grand slam for the Vikings (3-5, 1-2) in the first inning of a Channel League game. It was his first home run since hitting four in the first two games.

Calabasas 6, Moorpark 1--Junior Josh Morton (4-0) allowed an unearned run, keeping his earned-run average at 0.00 ERA through 20 innings. He also doubled to extend a hitting streak that started last season to 28 games.

Sylmar 13, Monroe 6--The Spartans broke open a Valley Pac-8 Conference game with five runs in the third inning.

Littlerock 12, Highland 8--Littlerock (3-4, 1-2) beat Highland (2-4-1, 0-2-1) for the first time in the eight games the schools have played. Toine Jager was three for four with a triple and improved to 3-2 on the mound in the Golden League game.

Hoover 14, Muir 3--The ninth-ranked Tornadoes (7-1, 4-0) took advantage of 14 walks in a Pacific League game.

St. Bonaventure 7, Bishop Diego 2--Jake Brown was two for three with two RBIs and was the winning pitcher in relief in a Tri-Valley League game for the Seraphs (3-6-1, 2-0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Camarillo, 15-1, 15-5, 15-9--Steve Hodge recorded a match-high 14 kills to lead Royal (6-0, 5-0) in a Marmonte League match at Camarillo. The win was the 100th for Royal, which has lost only six times in six seasons.
