BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Padres Unload Jackson in Deal With Blue Jays
The San Diego Padres traded outfielder Darrin Jackson to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday for outfielder Derek Bell and minor league outfielder Stoney Briggs.
Jackson batted .249 with 17 home runs and 70 runs batted in last season. He had been on the market since winning $2.1 million in arbitration from the Padres, who have been unloading high-salaried players since the end of last season.
“I’m a little sad,†Jackson said. “But what are you going to say? San Diego has always been kind of a dream place for me to play.â€
Bell, who on Sunday was criticized by Blue Jay Manager Cito Gaston for his lackadaisical play, batted .242 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 61 games last season.

Philadelphia’a Darren Daulton became the highest-paid catcher in baseball, agreeing to an $18.5-million, four-year extension through the 1997 season.
Daulton will make $2.25 million in 1993, the final season of a three-year deal worth $6.75 million guaranteed. The new contract gives the Phillies a 1998 option at $5 million with a $500,000 buyout.
Daulton, 31, had his best season in 1992, batting .270 with 27 home runs and a league-leading 109 RBIs.

The Boston Red Sox waived pitcher Matt Young, who spent parts of the last two seasons on the disabled list.
Once the left-hander clears waivers on Friday, he will be free to sign with any other team.
Young was a combined 3-11 the last two years. He spent parts of both seasons on the disabled list.
Because his contract is guaranteed, the Red Sox will be responsible for his $1.7-million salary if he isn’t claimed by another team.

First baseman Hal Morris of the Cincinnati Reds separated his left shoulder during an altercation in a game against the Cleveland Indians.
Morris charged the mound and tackled pitcher Jose Mesa after Mesa threw an 0-2 fastball behind the head of Morris. Morris will be sidelined from four to six weeks.

Pittsburgh Pirate center fielder Andy Van Slyke tested his right knee for the first time in three weeks, appearing in two minor league exhibition games.
Van Slyke went two for 10, mostly as a designated hitter, and also played three innings in center field. Van Slyke was bothered by discomfort in the knee before a dime-sized piece of cartilage was removed during arthroscopic surgery March 13.

The Milwaukee Brewers signed shortstop Dickie Thon, 34, who had been in Milwaukee’s camp as a nonroster player. Thon batted .247 in 95 games with the Texas Rangers last season and has a .264 average in 12 major league seasons.

The Detroit Tigers bought left-handed reliever Bob MacDonald from the Toronto Blue Jays in a straight cash deal.
