Officially, the Ottawa Senators lost their 37th consecutive road game Tuesday night, 6-4, to the Penguins in Pittsburgh to tie an 18-year-old NHL record for futility.

Unofficially, it’s even worse.

The game was actually the 39th consecutive time the Senators, in their first season in the NHL, have lost away from home. However, the NHL doesn’t count their two neutral-site games as road games.

The Washington Capitals set the consecutive-loss road record in 1974-75 as an expansion team, losing 37 in a row.

Pittsburgh is on a streak of a different sort. The victory was the Penguins’ 11th in a row, a franchise record.

Mario Lemieux had his 57th goal and an assist to give him 141 points, best in the NHL.

Winnipeg 5, Calgary 4--The Jets’ Fredrik Olausson scored on a rebound of a Phil Housley shot with just over five minutes to play in the third period to snap a 4-4 tie at Calgary.

The victory gave Winnipeg a 4-1-1 record in its last six games and moved the Jets to within three points of the third-place Kings in the Smythe Division.

Rookie Teemu Selanne scored his 71st goal for Winnipeg.

The Flames, who have lost five of their last six, are four points ahead of the Kings.

Vancouver 6, St. Louis 3--Cliff Ronning and Jyrki Lumme each scored twice at St. Louis as the Canucks ended a 1-5 slump.

Jeff Brown had two power-play goals for the Blues, who were without 50-goal scorer Brett Hull for the fourth consecutive game. Hull has been sidelined because of tendinitis in his left wrist. St. Louis is 2-2 without him.

Although they lost the game, the Blues’ didn’t lose their consistency in one department. With the top-ranked penalty-killing unit in the NHL, St. Louis stopped Vancouver on its only two power-play chances. The Blues have not given up a goal in 32 consecutive shorthanded situations.

N.Y. Islanders 2, Philadelphia 1--Benoit Hogue, who has missed the last six games because of a knee sprain, had a goal and an assist at Uniondale, N.Y., to lead the Islanders into fourth place in the Patrick Division, one point ahead of their cross-town rivals, the Rangers.

Hogue assisted on the game-winner, which was scored by Pierre Turgeon on a power play.

Boston 3, Hartford 1--Stephane Richer scored an unassisted goal, his first in the NHL, at Hartford to help the Bruins maintain their mastery over the Whalers. Boston is 17-2-1 against Hartford in their last 20 regular-season games. Ten Bruin victories have been one-goal decisions, five in overtime.

Adam Oates had an assist to extend his streak in that department to 11 games, his point-scoring streak to 13 games.

Washington 4, Buffalo 1--Rookie Keith Jones broke a 1-1 tie with his 10th goal at the start of the second period and the Capitals ended a two-game losing streak.

The Sabres’ loss at Landover, Md., was only their second in their last 11 road games.
