Bruce Mitchell Named BankAmerica Auditor

Bruce Mitchell has been named general auditor of BankAmerica Corp., effective May 1, the San Francisco-based bank announced Tuesday.

Mitchell, 54, is now executive vice president and head of global payment services for the bank’s Europe, Middle East and Africa divisions.

He will oversee a staff of 700 and be responsible for the bank’s audit program and compliance with policies, procedures, practices, laws and regulations and all security operations, and will report to Chairman and Chief Executive Richard M. Rosenberg and the auditing and examining committee of the board of directors.

Mitchell succeeds George Cherrie, 57, who is retiring April 30 after 34 years with BankAmerica. Cherrie plans to join the Conventual Franciscan Friars, a Catholic religious order serving the poor.

Mitchell, who joined the bank in 1963 as a community relations officer, was appointed to his current position in March, 1990.
