Allison Wins Darlington Race
One minute, there was a logjam on the Darlington Raceway oval at Darlington, S.C. The next, there was Davey Allison, ahead of the pack and on his way to victory Saturday in the Dodge International Race of Champions.
How did it happen?
Don’t ask Allison until he can see a video tape.
“There was so much that happened in the first 14 laps, I’d have to go back and watch a replay to tell you what happened,†said Allison, whose second IROC victory gave him the point lead after two of the four races in the 1993 series.
The NASCAR driver started ninth in the 12-car field but was able to knife through the thick traffic on the narrow, 1.366-mile track and into the lead on the 12th of 60 laps.
He stayed in front the rest of the way in his rose-colored No. 2 racer, one of the 12 identically prepared Dodge Daytonas in the event. Allison averaged 142.470 m.p.h.
Former IROC series champion Dale Earnhardt finished second.
